8th May 2005The North Oxford Canal
The northern section of the Oxford canal, from Braunston to Hawkesbury Junction, via Rugby. More pictures added 8th January 2006.
4th May 2005A few South Western Waterways
So far, these include the Bude Canal, the Grand Western and the Chard Canal. More pictures added 12th May 2005.
19th Mar 2005The Coventry Canal
An important link in the waterway network of the Midlands. More pictures added 1st November 2008.
16th Mar 2005Exeter Ship Canal
Connecting the city of Exeter with the sea. More ictures added 22nd November 2009.
23rd Jan 2005Peak Forest Canal
Built to serve some of Derbyshire's industries. At Whaley Bridge and Buxworth, it connected with rail systems to reach the local quarries. More pictures added 5th August 2007.
23rd Jan 2005The Llangollen Canal
Built to serve the industry around Trefor, with the canal to Llangollen itself being built mainly as a feeder. One picture added 11th August 2005.
22nd Jan 2005Lea and Stort Navigation
These canalised rivers enable boats from Hertford and Bishops Stortford to reach the River Thames and the rest of the inland waterway network. More pictures added 20th July 2009.
15th Jan 2005The Worcester and Birmingham Canal
Creating a link between the River Severn and the network of canals around Britain's second city. More pictures added 18th June 2008.
7th Jan 2005Manchester Ship Canal and River Weaver
Two separate NW waterways, put in the same collection due to my lack of photos and the fact that both still have some commercial traffic. More pictures added 11th June 2008.
2nd Jan 2005Grantham Canal
Connecting Grantham with Nottinghamshire and the River Trent, the canal is gradually being restored. More pictures added 4th June 2006.
29th Dec 2004Fossdyke and Witham Navigations
Connecting the River Trent to the Wash. The Fossdyke is Britain's oldest canal, built by the Romans. Also included here are the Witham Navigable Drains in South Lincolnshire. More pictures added 7th August 2005.

I've photographed a few canals and navigable waterways in Ireland, though I'd like to return for a closer look. Two photos added 7th January 2005.

I have very few photos, at present, of these navigations, but I intend to take some soon. More pictures added 19th March 2006.
25th Dec 2004The Lancaster Canal
Unless otherwise stated, all the photos here date from 1992 when I was able to traverse the whole canal from Preston to Tewitfield, including the Glasson Dock branch. More pictures added 8th October 2008.
24th Dec 2004Canals around Birmingham and the West Midlands Updated
It's said that Birmingham has more canals than Venice. There are certainly a lot and a few are featured here. More pictures added 4th November 2008.
12th Dec 2004The Low Countries
The Netherlands and Belgium have extensive inland waterway systems. More pictures added 12th July 2009.
5th Dec 2004Navigations of the Humber
Several rivers flowing into the Humber were/are navigable, including the Hull and Ancholme. These will be included here, as will the man made waterways such as the Market Weighton Canal. More photos added 4th December 2009.
29th Nov 2004River Nene
The River Nene allows boats to travel from Sutton Bridge (on the Wash) to Northampton, where the Grand Union can be joined. Also included are some of the Fenland waterways that connect with the Nene. More pictures added 23rd November 2008.

A Fenland waterway navigable through Ely and right up to Cambridge. More pictures added 25th September 2005.
29th Nov 2004Montgomery Canal
Gradually being restored, the Monty will eventually reconnect parts of Mid Wales with the canal network. One picture added 6th May 2006.
29th Nov 2004The Shropshire Canal
Do not confuse this long closed navigation with the Shropshire Union, which is well and truly open. The Ironbridge Gorge Museum has restored part of the Shropshire Canal.
29th Nov 2004The Great Ouse
Not to be confused with other rivers of the same name, this one is navigable and flows into the Wash. More pictures added 13th September 2009.
29th Nov 2004The Caledonian Canal
This BW owned waterway connects the east coast of Scotland with the west and passes through Loch Ness and the Great Glen. Only a very few pics, taken on one summer evening, at the eastern end, at the moment. One picture added 15th January 2006.
21st Nov 2004Sheffield and South Yorkshire Navigation
This collection also includes the Stainforth and Keadby, New Junction, the Dearne and Dove and the Barnsley Canals. More pictures added 27th October 2008.
18th Nov 2004Waterways in the South East Updated
Once the area south of London was served by a network of canals, but few survive today. More photos added 17th January 2010.
24th Oct 2004Forth and Clyde/Union Canals Updated
Now fully re-opened, this canal system connects Glasgow and Edinburgh with the Clyde and Forth. The crowning glory is the Falkirk Wheel. Also included is the short waterway beween the Clyde & Loch Lomond. More pictures added 17th January 2010.
26th Sep 2004The Leek and Caldon Canals
Originally running from Etruria (near Stoke on Trent) to Uttoxeter, the canal was cut back to Froghall when the railway line opened. A short branch still runs to Leek. More pictures added 28th October 2009.
25th Sep 2004Stratford on Avon Canal
I haven't explored this restored canal too much, but I have been to Stratford a few times and have found a few other pictures in my collection. More pictures added 1st November 2008.
25th Sep 2004Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal
An important navigation, enabling boats to travel from the Trent & Mersey Canal to the River Severn, without going through Birmingham. More pictures added 9th September 2008.
24th Sep 2004Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal
Originally linking Brecon with the Bristol Channel, only the northern portion remains navigable today. More pictures added 9th August 2007.
17th Sep 2004River Trent
The navigable section of the River Trent runs from near Shardlow (in Derbyshire) to Trent Falls, where it joins the Ouse to form the Humber. More pictures added 24th May 2009.
16th Sep 2004The South Oxford Canal
Starting in Oxford, the canal heads north through Banbury and joins the Grand Union near Napton. One picture added 6th July 2008.

The Grand Union Leicester Section and the River Soar Navigation. More pictures added 28th August 2007.

Navigable from Lechlade in Gloucestershire right down to the sea. More pictures added 17th January 2010.
14th Sep 2004Rochdale Canal
This Tran-Pennine waterway starts at Sowerby Bridge (in Yorkshire) and runs right through to Manchester. It has recently been the subject of a major restoration. More pictures added 13th December 2006.
13th Sep 2004Leeds and Liverpool Canal
Starting in Leeds, the canal heads for Lancashire via Skipton, then passes through Burnley and the East Lancashire towns before terminating in the docks at Liverpool. More pictures added 8th November 2008.
13th Sep 2004Kennet and Avon (including the River Avon)
Cutting across the south of England, from Reading to Bath, via Newbury and Devizes. The Kennet and Avon re-opened in 1990 after a major restoration project. More Pictures Added 29th November 2008.
13th Sep 2004Huddersfield Broad and Narrow Canals
The Huddersfield Broad Canal connects from the Calder and Hebble with Huddersfield, while the Narrow Canal continues westwards through the Pennines. More pictures added 26th October 2005.
13th Sep 2004Calder and Hebble Navigation
This Yorkshire waterway runs from the Aire and Calder at Castleford, through Wakefield, to Sowerby Bridge, where it meets the Rochdale Canal. More pictures added 13th December 2006.

Still a commercial waterway, connecting Goole and the Humber with West Yorkshire. More pictures added 2nd October 2006.

One of Britain's longest and busiest canals. More pictures added 7th December 2008.

There are several isolated canals that closed many moons ago. Traces of them can still be seen at various locations. One more picture added 30th March 2005
10th Sep 2004Shropshire Union Canal
The Shroppie runs from just north of Wolverhampton to Ellesmere Port, on the Mersey. Ellesmere Port is now home to a fine museum. More pictures added 9th September 2008.
10th Sep 2004Macclesfield Canal
This navigation connects the Trent and Mersey with the Peak Forest. More pictures added 11th June 2008.
10th Sep 2004The Gloucester & Sharpness & the Stroudwater Canals
Most of Gloucestershire's waterways merged into one collection. Here you'll find Gloucester Docks (a fantastic place!), the Gloucester & Sharpness, the Stroudwater and (eventually) the Thames & Severn. More pictures added 20th May 2006.
10th Sep 2004Chesterfield Canal
Running from West Stockwith (on the Trent) to Chesterfield, navigation ceased beyond Worksop, though it is gradually being restored. More pictures added 20th January 2008.
10th Sep 2004Bridgewater and Taunton Canal Updated
Connecting the two Somerset towns, the canal fell into the hands of the rival Great Western Railway, who allowed it to run down. It re-opened in 1994 and the pictures here are from that occasion. One picture added 17th January 2010.
10th Sep 2004Bridgewater Canal
Connecting Manchester to the Mersey. At one time, the canal went directly into the coal mines! One picture added 5th August 2007.

Welcome to my Inland Waterways site. I have been interested in canals and other navigable waterways for many years and have finally decided to publish some of my pictures on the internet. I hope you enjoy them. All comments, corrections, and additional information welcome.
